Driving Creek Heritage Nursery
Driving Creek Heritage Nursery sits adjacent to the famous mountain railway in the historic Driving Creek Valley, Coromandel Town. Once surrounded by vast Kauri forests, the trees were felled and floated down to the Coromandel harbour in the rushing waters from the driving dams – hence the area’s name. British naval ships were loading tall young Kauri for masts and spars barely 26 years after Captain Cook first visited in 1769 and over the next 100 years the Coromandel forest was reduced to 2.5% of it’s original size.
In 1852 gold was discovered less than 500 metres from the nursery, again resulting in massive land degradation, followed thereafter by farming to complete the destructive trifecta. Constant erosion has filled the harbour with silt that once averaged 15 feet of clear water.
The nursery was begun as a direct positive response to these waves of devastating exploitation and to provide locally sourced and grown seedlings to assist in the re-growth of the local area. This motivation has never changed and over time we have repeatedly sourced seed from the best of the remaining giants and local groves to conserve the genetic lines to the past. Apart from our native tree and garden collections we also carry a range of fruiting sub-tropicals best suited to our local climate.
A selection of plants are available on a retail stall at the front of the nursery, operated by an honesty box. If you require any assistance please feel free to contact the Nursery and a staff member will arrange to meet with you to provide expert advise at the Nursery or at your home. Staff at the nursery are also available for planting advice or layout services and offer wholesale pricing for bulk orders.
Please contact Willie Lochore (m: 0212063113) or Sarni Hart (m: 021813722) for an appointment. Alternatively you may leave a message with Coromandel Adventures on 07 8667014 or email us on info@heritagenursery.co.nz.
