• Captain James Cook (18th-century explorer) has a full-size replica of the great cabin on HMS Endeavour, complete with a model in Captain Cook’s dress uniform. Joseph Banks (botanist) nearby and an unnamed young man;
• In the lobby is a statue of Coupé, his wife, and his tohunga (learned priest), who recognize the role of East Polynesian voyagers to Aotearoa New Zealand. Coupe named the area along Taputapuatea Beach in honor of his mara in Tahiti;

• Fishing exhibits and logging operations are carefully documented;
• Find the butter churn that continues to stand in its place in the former daily factory.

With exhibits on the Polynesian explorer Coupe, Maori artifacts, the Indewar and James Cook, HMS Buffalo (sunk in 1840), kauri wood and gum, the old dairy that houses the museum, early settler records, natural history, fishing displays and a superb collection of photographs.

There is an exhibition of the sunken ship HMS Buffalo (1840) and an exhibition of the coastal port. There is a school room from 1953, a blacksmith shop and the very popular Kauri Room. The natural bird exhibit of the area is a bit dusty with stuffed birds that are forever frozen in flight.

The museum is located in the premises of the former Mercury Bay Dairy. The Kauri Timber Company Mill existed on this site. The site used to be an urupa (cemetery); two crew members who died on HMS Buffalo are buried there. HMS Buffalo relics are carefully removed from the water grave.

There is an entrance fee to support museum activities. The museum is run primarily by volunteers. This museum is part of the Coromandel Peninsula Cultural Heritage Trail.

The ridge is one of several that form a bone of volcanic origin that runs through the northern North Island. South of the Coromandel Ridge, separated by the winding Karangahake Gorge, the bone continues with the Kaimai Ridge.

The large island of Great Barrier, at the entrance to Hauraki Bay north of the Coromandel Peninsula, can be considered the northern extension of this bone of the Coromandel volcanic zone.

The first stop on the Coromandel Ridge route is a visit to Thames; it is a historic New Zealand city located between the “Thames Firth” and the Coromandel Ridge. The Maori population settled in this area in the fifteenth century, and it was not until 1867 that the city received its current physiognomy.

Thames is the perfect starting point if you want to discover the magnificent Coromandel Range. The landscape is magnificent, as is its riverside path, which can be discovered on foot or by bike. And the culinary offer, with fresh fish served a little bit everywhere (seafood seems to be the main course), is absolutely top notch.
Just outside the city, in the hills, lies the magnificent Coweranga Valley with its breathtaking trails and some of the most adventurous activities and excursions the peninsula has to offer; there are also ample camping opportunities in the area for those who like.

The Thames Coast Road, coast 25, is a scenic road with great views of Thames Bay. Head up to Tapu before turning onto Tapu Coroglen Road; over 30km of dirt road that climbs into the mountains for great views.

From Coroglen, continue towards Waiau, which can be reached via road 309. This is another incredible and impressive mountain dirt road. The goal is Waiau Falls, a beautiful naturalistic show. Along 309 there is a small parking lot from which you leave the car after a short walk. A few minutes from here, the suggestive Waiau Kauri Grove awaits you; it is a beautiful naturalistic route where you can see some surviving kauri, the truly magical giant trees of the area.

COROMANDEL FOREST PARK

• Kauri, forest giants that survived 19th century logging, can be found on Highway 309 (near the town of Coromandel) and the Manaia Sanctuary further south;
• The Coweranga Valley near the Thames with tram trails, gold mining relics and a vintage train;
• Hikers enjoy limestone outcrops, peaks, with accommodation in a forest lodge;
• Wentworth Falls (near Wangamati) is a magnificent waterfall located in the middle of the forest;
• Accessibility, the forest spans the coastline, allowing visitors the best of both worlds: the beach, the marine world and the world of lush, luxuriant green multi-layered forest;

Popularized by a patch of thermal water bubbling just below the beach’s surface at low tide, Hot Water Beach has gained cult status as a world wonder right here on Coromandel. Visitors flock to the normally deserted Hot Water Beach two hours in advance in both directions at low tide. The temptation of the hot water attracts people in buses, campers, tour groups and rental cars. They pull into the newly expanded parking lot with a mixture of excitement, fascination, and anticipation on their faces.

At high tide, the beach looks just as you would expect – dramatic, undulating surf, a rocky shoreline framed by cliffs, a vast horizon with shadowy glimpses of islands in the distance. At low tide, the scene changes dramatically. Every day (and at night with a full moon), without exception, regardless of weather, holidays, season or circumstances, you will find a community of people gathered within a 20-meter radius. They will be diligently digging a small pool or diving into the results of their or someone else’s previous efforts. The water is hot – up to 64 degrees Celsius.

The main Pay and Display parking lot is located at the extreme southern end of Hot Water Beach. It has restrooms, including a cold outdoor shower. This is a 24-hour parking lot for which an additional fee is charged. Adventure awaits just beyond the shallow creek, which must be crossed with pants rolled up, towels and shovels in hand to reach Hot Rock about 200 meters along the beach.

A larger parking lot further along the road offers overflow paid parking and restrooms, as well as a nice walk along the “Pa Track” near the stream if you prefer not to walk through the water.

The tide will determine when you visit Hot Water Beach. But how long you stay is up to you.

Hot Water Beach is a place loved by brave adventurers and sightseers. It offers a little work, a little play, and a lot of relaxation in an environment that is both social and lonely.

On a cold Coromandel day – or a rainy one – a trip to Hot Water Beach is unbeatable.

This section of surf is dangerous, with dangerous breaks that challenge even the strongest swimmers. Caution is advised. Paddle carefully even when swimming in knee-deep water at Hot Water Beach. Volunteer lifeguards patrol the beach every weekend from Labor Day weekend to Easter in the summer. Regional guards patrol the beach from December to February.

From the northern edge of the beach, a one-hour walkway leads along the cliff top and then down to the bay. Here, a giant arched cave passes through a white rocky promontory, connecting two separate bays. The cathedral-like arch gives the whole area a majestic feel. The sandy beach with shady hohutukawa trees along the shore is an ideal place for a picnic and swimming.

Not far from the beach in Cathedral Bay, there is a large pumice breccia peak known as Te Hoho. Over the centuries, it has been sculpted by wind and water – now it looks like the bow of a large ship sailing towards the shore.

If you prefer a slightly shorter walk (about 1.5 hours round trip), start at the parking lot at the end of Grange Road in Hahei – turn left just after the Hahei shops. The highest parking lot on Grange Road is the pick-up and drop-off area for the shuttle. Parking on Grange Rd is prohibited from October 1 to April 30. From May 1 to September 30, a limited amount of parking is available on Grange Rd.

During the summer months, a shuttle runs from the visitor parking lot on Pa Road to the start of the Cathedral Cove trail. It costs $5 round trip per person, $3 for a child and $10 for a family (2 adults and 2 children). All visitors to Hahei Beach and Cathedral Cove are encouraged to use this parking lot. A third parking lot is open during the summer months on Lees Road.

For snorkelers and scuba divers, the Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve offers a visual feast of sponge gardens, reef systems and marine life.
